On June 23, 2008 7th Generation received a check for $2,500.00 from the Winn-Dixie Foundation in response to a letter of inquiry we submitted in August 2007. The foundation focuses on hunger, women and children, health and education initiatives. Winn-Dixie has a long history of supporting the communities in which they operate. The full amount of this donation will be used for direct program support for our Veterinary Technology Scholarship Program. We are very excited and appreciative that the Winn-Dixie Foundation chose 7th Generation as a worthwhile investment in their community.

We are pleased to announce that 7th Gen, in partnership with Upper Mohawk, Inc., has awarded 17 computers to the Dennehotso Boarding school, in Dennehotso, Arizona on the Navajo reservation. This school is unique in its remoteness and needs for upgraded computing resources for the students, which made it a prime candidate for a donation from 7th Gen.

The Dennehotso Boarding school has no computer lab and has not had an IT upgrade or addition since 2000. In fact, their upgrade in 2000 was incomplete and left several buildings out of the network. Upper Mohawk, Inc. will be donating the technical expertise in order to get the computers that 7th Gen donated, up and running.

With these 17 computers and another 13 donated by a local college, two computer labs should be fully functional by the time summer begins. With modern internet resources and learning tools, the school's principal, Veronica Klain hopes to help the students better their education through technology.

Even with the donations by 7th Gen, Upper Mohawk, Inc. (UMI) and the local college, the school still requires more technical resources, including a qualified network administrator to be onsite permanently. Principal Klain also faces the challenge of putting together a comprehensive information technology plan for the school and obtaining further extensive networking upgrades. For the second year in a row, 7th Gen and UMI have partnered to provide the prizes for the 1st place winners of the Great Plains High School Business Plan Competition. The purpose of the Indian Entrepreneur Business Plan Competition is to foster entrepreneurship in the Great Plains Region by getting high school students to think about creating business opportunities in and around Indian Country in Nebraska, North Dakota, and South Dakota. The written applications were reviewed and scored on three main components: completeness of the business idea; viability as an ongoing business; and creativity and innovation. The five submissions with the highest scores advanced to the final competition where they were required to make a 10-minute oral business presentation to a panel of judges. They were scored on: communication ability, visual component and overall effectiveness.

The event was held on April 15, 2008 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota at the 10th Annual Great Plains Tribal Economic Development Summit and our board vice-president, Ron Harp served as one of the judges. He was honored to award two desktop computers including monitors, Microsoft Office software, and printers to the members of the winning team, two young women from Rosebud Reservation. Ron reported that all five entrants they did an excellent job. However, the Rosebud team did such a great job on their plan that the judges expect it to become a reality someday. "Hats off" to them for producing what many companies would be proud to call their business plan.

Many thanks to Will Davis, one of our board members who is also vice-president of the board of Native Heritage Gathering, Inc. which sponsors an annual Pow Wow, for arranging for 7th Gen to be honored at their Melbourne Pow Wow on Dec. 7 and 8, 2007. As part of that honoring, 7th Gen did a "give-away," which honored the Pow Wow Committee members, Head Man and Head Lady, MC, Arena Director, the drums, Veterans, other dignitaries and the children. 7th Gen, who was represented by our AmeriCorps VISTA member, Lisa McCann, was then given an Honor Dance. Lisa also set up a demonstration table with educational materials on 7th Gen to get the word out locally about our Veterinary Technology scholarship program at Brevard Community College. Will and his two children were participants in the dancing and competed in contest dancing. Both children placed in their categories and won first place in the "switch" dance contest.
